Frank Buckles, the last surviving World War I veteran, passed away Sunday morning at the age of 110. Mr Buckles, a former Corporal in the U.S. Army, served as an ambulance driver in Europe during the “Great War”. Years later, during WWII, Mr Buckles was captured by the Japanese while working on a merchant vessel in the Philippines. He spent more than three years as a prisoner of war before being freed by U.S. troops.
President Obama issued a statement Monday on Buckles' passing, saying he and first lady Michelle Obama were "inspired" by Buckles' story.
Frank Buckles lived the American Century," Obama's statement said. "Like so many veterans, he returned home, continued his education, began a career, and along with his late wife Audrey, raised their daughter Susannah. We join Susannah and all those who knew and loved her father in celebrating a remarkable life that reminds us of the true meaning of patriotism and our obligations to each other as Americans."
God speed Frank Buckles, we thank you for your service to our country.

Yes it is Sad that this man has passed. But he was not the last World War 1 Veteran. British Veterans Claude Stanley Choules and Florence Beatrice Green still survive.
May the Veterans of Britain and the US live on in our memories.
