Hi,

I used to play and haunt the forums (in game since July '02 as Gabbbo, in forums as gabbo, brief stint beta testing until work got too busy) but haven't played seriously in 5 years. I now have a faster PC and am curious as to what the game would be like with a decent frame rate Smile.

Can anyone give me a brief overview of where things are now? I know AA3 came out and is a completely different game; I registered to keep my old name of Gabbbo years ago but never did anything about it. I gather there are still folks who play an old version of AA2 but is that only on private servers? And what (without getting into a "which is better" argument) are the big differences between the two games?

Well, I don't wanna compare graphics coz, of course, is not fair.

AAO more tactics, AA3 more faster
AAO stable engine, AA3 some nice innovation
AAO more maps and real weapons, AA3 maps better balanced
AAO a lot of players, AA3 less hackers
AAO incomparable but the past, AA3 "lag&bug" but the future

By the way if your AAO preferred maps were CQB like Urban Assault, Hospital, Interdiction and so on maybe you would like AA3 too...

Sadly I stayed away from CQB maps. My favorites were Bridge (but not Bridge SE), Mountain Pass, and Hospital (but Hospital as Escort and sniping people w/ M4A1 from outside).

So is there any point in downloading AA3 at all? I see there's a Bridge map but if it's like Bridge SE there's no point...

I tried Bridge last night (and roamed around an empty Hospital server). The game was much more fluid on an up-to-date PC, but I found I've almost completely forgotten the controls (plus I need to re-create my old bindings).

The biggest tragedy was the lack of an official server for Bridge -- at least, none that I saw. The server I found was one where you could select any weapon you wanted, so it turned into an artillery battle. Not to say anything against the guys on the server, but it wasn't what I always liked about Bridge.
